Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy has three layers. The Essentials give the practical points most visitors need. The Details explain the data practices behind them. The Legal Notices set out the jurisdiction-specific rights and formal terms. Each layer is part of the Privacy Policy, and a reader who wants the whole picture should read all three.

Layer One: Essentials

What this covers

The Privacy Policy is about the website and the personal information handled through it. It is written to fit websites of different kinds, so it refers to features, such as registration, public submissions, analytics, and advertising, that the website may or may not have. A reference to a feature takes effect only if the website actually offers it. Third-party websites are not covered.

Five things worth knowing

• Visiting the website may generate technical data that is collected automatically.
• Anything you submit for public display should be considered permanently public.
• Cookies and similar technologies may be in use, and you can manage them.
• Depending on where you live, the law may give you rights over your personal information.
• The Contact Us page on the website is the single point of contact for privacy matters.

Three things to avoid

• Putting confidential, private, or sensitive personal information in content intended for publication.
• Sending government identification numbers, financial account credentials, medical information, or other highly sensitive personal details through public submission forms, unless specifically requested and necessary.
• Giving personal information to an external website reached through a link before reading that website's privacy policy.

Layer Two: Details

Automatic collection

The website may log the IP address a visit comes from and may infer general geographic information from it. It may record browser type, device type, and operating system, as well as referring URLs, pages visited, and the date and time of visits. Cookie data and analytics information may be added where those technologies are used.

Information from visitors

We may receive contact form information from visitors who write to us. Where registration is available, we may receive registration or account information. Where the website supports publication, listings, bookmarks, press releases, directories, comments, profiles, or similar functionality, we may receive the content visitors submit.

Submissions

Some websites may allow users to submit articles, business listings, directory listings, press releases, URLs, website submissions, bookmarks, comments, profiles, business information, contact information, images, documents, or other content. Where the website does, we handle the information in each submission in order to process it.

Public information

A submission made for public display may be published. Published information may be accessible to visitors, indexed by search engines, cached by search engines, viewed by third parties, shared through external websites, and copied or redistributed outside our control. This is why the Essentials advise treating public submissions as permanent.

Purposes

We may use information to operate and maintain the website and to provide its functionality. We may use it to process and review submissions, publish approved content, and manage listings, and to respond to inquiries. We may use it to prevent spam, fraud, and abuse, to maintain security, to carry out analytics and performance measurement, to understand usage, and to improve functionality. We may also use it for legal and regulatory compliance, for enforcing website policies, and for advertising where applicable.

Cookies and similar technologies

The website may use essential cookies, functional cookies, analytics cookies, advertising cookies, and third-party cookies. Pixels, tags, and similar tracking technologies may be used as well. The mix varies from one website to another.

Cookies may be managed through browser settings, through cookie controls provided by the website where available, and through consent management mechanisms where applicable.

Analytics

We may use third-party analytics services to understand how visitors interact with the website and to improve website performance.

Advertising

The website may display third-party advertisements. It does not necessarily do so. Where it does, advertising partners and advertising networks may use advertising cookies, device identifiers, and other advertising technologies. Advertising may be contextual, personalized, or interest-based. Visitors may have advertising choices, including opt-out mechanisms required by applicable law.

Third-party services

We may use external hosting providers, analytics providers, advertising providers, security services, spam-prevention tools, content delivery networks, embedded media providers, social media services, technical service providers, and other vendors. These third parties may process information in accordance with their own privacy policies and legal obligations.

Other disclosures

Where applicable and legally permitted, information may be disclosed to professional advisers, to legal authorities, courts, regulators, and law enforcement, and to successors in connection with a merger, acquisition, restructuring, sale, or transfer of assets.

External links

The website may contain links to external websites, including in articles, press releases, directory entries, bookmarks, and listings. We do not control the privacy practices of external websites, which have their own privacy policies.

Retention

Information is kept for as long as there is a reasonable need and is not kept afterwards. A need may relate to providing functionality, processing submissions, maintaining published content, administering the website, security, fraud prevention, recordkeeping, legal obligations, resolving disputes, or enforcing agreements.

Security

We may apply reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards. No one can guarantee the security of data sent over the internet or held in electronic storage, and we do not. No such system is 100% secure.

International transfers

Information may be processed, stored, or transferred in countries other than a visitor's country of residence. Where the law requires safeguards for international transfers, they may be used.

Children

The website is not intended to knowingly collect personal information from children below the age required by applicable law. A parent or guardian who believes a child has submitted personal information may contact us through the Contact Us page.

Layer Three: Legal Notices

Laws addressed

This Privacy Policy is intended to address applicable privacy and data-protection requirements, including the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the UK GDPR and applicable UK data-protection legislation, the California Consumer Privacy Act and California Privacy Rights Act (CCPA/CPRA), other U.S. state privacy laws, cookie and electronic communications rules, and other national, state, or regional privacy regulations, where those laws apply. It does not state that any law applies to all visitors. Applicability depends on location, the website's activities, the information collected, and the technologies used.

Legal bases

Where a legal basis for processing is required, including in GDPR jurisdictions, we may rely on consent, performance of a contract, legitimate interests, or compliance with legal obligations. The applicable legal basis depends on the specific processing activity.

Rights under the GDPR

Right of access; right to correction or rectification; right to deletion or erasure; right to restrict processing; right to object; right to data portability; right to withdraw consent; right to lodge a complaint with an appropriate supervisory authority.

Rights under UK law

Corresponding rights under the UK GDPR and applicable UK data-protection legislation, including the right to complain to the UK supervisory authority.

Rights under California law

Under the CCPA and CPRA, where applicable: right to know; right to access; right to correct; right to delete; right to opt out of the sale of personal information; right to opt out of sharing for cross-context behavioral advertising; right to limit certain uses or disclosures of sensitive personal information; right to non-discrimination for exercising applicable privacy rights.

Rights under other U.S. state laws

Residents of certain U.S. states may have privacy rights under applicable state laws. Available rights depend on place of residence, applicability thresholds, the website's activities, and applicable law.

Conditions on rights

All rights described in these Legal Notices depend on applicable law, may be subject to exceptions, and may require identity verification.

Sale or sharing

If activities conducted through the website constitute a "sale" or "sharing" of personal information under applicable law, eligible users may have the right to opt out. No categorical statement is made about whether such activities take place, as this depends on the legal definitions and the arrangements in effect.

Global Privacy Control

Browser-based privacy preference signals such as Global Privacy Control (GPC) may be recognized where required by applicable law.

Do Not Track

No common standard exists for Do Not Track signals, and the website may not respond to them unless required by law.

Privacy requests

Requests relating to access, correction, deletion, data portability, restriction, objection, consent withdrawal, advertising opt-outs, sale or sharing opt-outs, and other legally available privacy rights should be submitted through the Contact Us page available on the website. Identity verification may be required. Additional information may be requested to verify a request. Some requests may be subject to legal exceptions. Requests from authorized agents will be handled where required by applicable law.

Changes to this Privacy Policy

Any layer of this Privacy Policy may be updated because of changes in website functionality, data-processing practices, technologies, cookies, third-party services, business practices, applicable laws, or regulatory requirements. The revised Privacy Policy will be posted on the website.

Effective date

This Privacy Policy becomes effective when published on the website. The version displayed on the website at any time is the version then in force.
